Across its districts, NSPHA provides more than 11,200 safe, affordable homes as part of its Housing Services to seniors and families. District offices manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia’s housing stock. Their responsibilities include administering tenant applications and placements, collecting rent, resolving tenant issues, and maintaining and repairing properties.

About Our Opportunity

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Client Services and/or the Property Maintenance in Charge, the Janitor is responsible for providing ground care services adhering to the standards and practices established by NSPHA. This includes maintenance of the grounds to provide safe and visually appealing property surroundings. Furthermore, the Janitor is responsible for providing a sense of security and assisting tenants.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Perform an inspection throughout the entire building to determine the cleanliness and security of the building.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of common areas such as elevators, laundry rooms, public washrooms, lounges, recreation areas, storage rooms, etc.
  • Clean vacant units when requested, including garbage and refuse removal and washing walls.
  • Prepare garbage and refuse for removal from properties and vacated premises, clean garbage rooms/chutes.
  • Complete work orders and material requisitions as required.
  • During the course of carrying out duties, provide client service by assessing tenant needs and/or complex deficiencies and report as required to the Supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 or high school equivalent plus two years’ related experience.
  • Ability to understand and operate equipment involved in cleaning while using good body mechanics.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to perform tasks in a safe manner according to the Department of Labour and Advanced Education and NSPHA safety standards and policies.
  • Possess interpersonal skills to deal with co-workers, tenants, contractors and vendors, other departments, and the public in a positive, tactful, courteous and cooperative manner.

Assets

  • Possess current Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications
