J.D. Irving, Limited's Woodlands Division is dedicated to sustainable forest management, proactive research and providing a long-term competitive fiber supply to the company's integrated value chain. We have a long history of reforestation and tree improvement. Working with the Maritime Innovation Laboratory, the Sussex Tree Nursery is pivotal in our R&D effort to develop a sustainable and efficient acclimatization process for our Somatic Embryogenesis seedlings (SE seedlings). Multiple approaches and technologies are under investigation in concert with partners around the world. Defining and implementing a suitable crop plan and adequate technology to transfer from the lab, acclimatize and grow our SE seedlings is crucial to our long-term goals to accelerate the deployment of our genetic gains to strengthen our long-term competitiveness.

We are currently looking for a ‘hands-on’, motivated individual to join the Sussex Tree Nursery team as an Irrigation Assistant.

Responsibilities:

• Operate and perform basic routine maintenance of irrigation systems and equipment
• Operate greenhouse environmental control equipment
• Irrigate and fertilize seedling crops in accordance with cultural production schedules
• Pesticide application and assisting with crop monitoring
• Crop maintenance (consolidation, weeding, taking measurements, moving)
• Weekend work and shift work may be required

Requirements:

• General knowledge of plants and plant production in greenhouses
• Post-secondary horticulture education would be an asset
• Understanding and adherence to safe work procedures in a production environment
• The ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
• Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn climate control systems.
• Mechanical aptitude.

• Applicants must hold, or be capable of obtaining, a Pesticide Applicator Certificate and a valid New Brunswick driver’s license
