Full Time Correctional & Justice Services Chaplain Job at The Salvation Army

Provide relevant emotional & spiritual care, pastoral support, relevant programming, information, and practical assistance to people with matters in Oshawa court or in custody at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay, ON including court and institutional staff. Maintain a prominent and positive profile for the broad ministry of The Salvation Army and its Correctional & Justice Services and support the broader chaplaincy team. This is a 5-day (35 hours) full time position Monday to Friday.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pastoral Care & Programming:

  • Provide relevant spiritual care programming and practical support to court and institutional clients and staff
  • Visit people in custody daily to interview and follow up with appropriate requests in accordance with policies
  • Lead chapel services, Bible studies, discussion groups, pastoral counseling sessions and programming
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and staff
  • Obtain and maintain inventory of appropriate clothing from Thrift Stores.
  • Support government duty chaplains as directed

Chaplain’s Organizational Responsibilities to The Salvation Army:

  • Support chaplaincy team ministry as required
  • Direct matters regarding government contacts to Director of Chaplaincy
  • Know all relevant policies, procedures and programs of the institution and The Salvation Army
  • Providing speaking engagements on Correctional & Justice Services as directed
  • Wear Salvation Army uniform or branded clothing.
  • Supervise, train, and provide orientation for Salvation Army volunteers as required

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Report to the Director of Chaplaincy
  • Maintain required chaplaincy records and statistics as directed
  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings, workshops, training and conferences as directed
  • Perform other duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

A desk is provided in an office in a criminal court and in a shared open-office area in a correctional centre. The position requires frequent walking and speaking with a wide variety of people and the ability to lift 25 lbs.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a recognized chaplaincy or spiritual care education program (e.g. The Salvation Army Certificate of Chaplaincy, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent)
  • Theological training
  • Certification by the Ontario Multi-Faith Council on Spiritual and Religious Care an asset
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in spiritual care ministry preferred
  • Public speaking and program delivery experience

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Previous Bible study and chapel leadership
  • Conduct spiritual care assessments and providing spiritual care ministry
  • Possess a friendly outgoing personality and be able to pray with people
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality, and excellent people and listening skills
  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills to assist people in crisis
  • Commitment to The Salvation Army mission and values and demonstrated ability to apply them in all aspects of chaplaincy
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Office & Teams and competent computer skills.
  • Able to excel in a high security setting and meet security expectations
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening and institutional security clearance
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
