NATURE OF WORK:

Metro Vancouver’s Water Services Department is hiring for multiple positions and is seeking dynamic and motivated individuals with skills in forest work, resource management, public education, and facility maintenance. Candidates should be capable of responding to incidents, working outdoors, communicating effectively with recreational users, and demonstrate some skills in the operation and maintenance of machines and tools. All positions will be based out of the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in North Vancouver or other watershed locations, as required.

DUTIES: (The duties described are intended to be representative of the position and are not to be considered as all-inclusive for each position)

  • Performs a variety of routine maintenance duties, such as: grass cutting, planting, brushing; and maintenance of trails, roads, bridges, buildings, park furniture, picnic sites; including garbage collection and litter pick up; and cleaning toilet facilities
  • Operates and maintains small machines (e.g. power washer & brusher) and larger mobile equipment
  • Patrols areas and trails on foot or by vehicle
  • Provides information, assistance and enforces rules with the public
  • Delivers public watershed tours for diverse public audiences including both adult, family, and school groups
  • Participate in public information events
  • Participates in environmental management including, restoration projects, invasive species management and planting, and terrestrial and aquatic wildlife management
  • Assists other work groups, as required, with various tasks not detailed above

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 diploma
  • Good physical condition with the ability to do heavy lifting. Foot travel in steep terrain and other challenging conditions will be required
  • Available to work flexible days and hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays
  • Class 5 BC Driver’s licence
  • Able to deal with public in a courteous and effective manner utilizing tact, diplomacy and good judgment
  • Experience working outdoors in inclement weather and other challenging conditions
  • Works effectively as part of a team and also is a self-motivated individual that can work independently
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills

ASSETS:

  • Post-secondary courses in Natural Resources Management and/or Environmental Sciences and/or Education
  • Experience delivering outdoor education interpretive programs
  • Work experience in a parks or forestry setting and/or in landscaping or construction
  • Off-road driving experience and operation of a variety of vehicle types
  • Valid BC Occupational First Aid Level 1 or Marine 1st Aid with Transportation Endorsement
  • Knowledge of local ecosystems, LSCR trail network and area
  • Knowledge of Metro Vancouver, it’s Watersheds and LSCR Regulations

HOURS OF WORK:
40 hours per week which will include weekend, evening and holiday work.

WAGE RATE:
$29.74 per hour plus 6.25% deferred compensation and some health benefits.
