Job Summary
The Faculty of Architecture & Planning comprises of two Schools that offer professional education in architecture and planning. Reporting to the Dean, the Director of Finance and Administration is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the financial stability and growth of the faculty at Dalhousie University. Working closely with Central Human Resources, the Director manages the Human Resources of all academic and non-academic staff for the Faculty and two Schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare the draft and final operating budgets for the Faculty, the School of Architecture and the School of Planning, the Dalhousie Architecture Press (DAP), plus future units, in consultation with the Dean and Directors.
  • Create a reliable system for tracking and forecasting budget performance and monitor budget expenditures to ensure proper use of University funds adhering to Dalhousie Financial Policies and procedures which includes all aspects of academic, research, advancement, and service activities.
  • Advise the Dean and Directors on financial policies and effective procedures, recommending appropriate action when policies and procedures are not followed.
  • Advise the Dean in short- and long-term budget planning and prepare the Faculty’s multi-year plan taking into consideration changes in personnel, programs, equipment and space planning. Assist the Dean in presenting the report to senior leaders at the University and attend meetings. Provide responses for any related questions.
  • Advise and assist Principal Investigators in preparing budget forecasts for research grant applications. Prepare financial reports for granting agencies, as applicable. Assist faculty with preparation of research budgets to meet the needs of the project, the University and the funding agencies.
  • Plan and review staff complement and conduct needs analysis to determine future staff planning and professional development in order to meet the needs addressed by the Faculty’s strategic plan.

Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant will be normally required to work in-person on campus. Hybrid options may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as financial management or business administration, plus approximately five year to seven years’ related experience in accounting and financial matters (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Leadership experience (people and programs or projects).
  • Demonstrated initiative, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Suite computer programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others.

Assets
  • CPA designation.
  • Experience in a post-secondary education environment.
