Your opportunity:

Discovery Commons (DC) provides information technology support for the Temerty Facultyof Medicine. Our mission is to partner and collaborate with clients, University, and third parties to determine value based, sustainable technology solutions that enable the Faculty to achieve its academic mission.

The DevOps Engineer will be responsible for introducing processes, tools, and methodologies to balance needs throughout the software development life cycle, from coding and deployment to maintenance and updates to the Faculty of Medicine. You will have a wide-ranging and deep understanding and knowledge of both development and operations, including coding, infrastructure management, system administration, common system architecture, provisioning, and application deployment. You will be responsible for implementing best-practices around continuous integration and delivery and work closely with our development and operations teams to ensure our systems are highly available, scalable, secure, and optimized for performance.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analyzing, recommending, and designing highly complex software architecture
  • Design, build and maintain highly scalable, secure, and available infrastructure, using modern tools and technologies such as Terraform, Ansible and Kubernetes
  • Implement best practices for continuous integration and delivery using GitOps Principles.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions to ensure that system performance is optimized, and issues are identified and resolved in real-time using tools like Prometheus, Grafana and the ELK stack
  • Planning and implementing security measures to safeguard database information
  • Conducting data modelling for business system analysis
  • Developing and maintaining standards and styles for visual and interface design of digital platforms.
  • Leading and planning IT projects


Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in a DevOps role
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of cloud infrastructure, such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud and experience with cloud-native architectures.
  • Strong proficiencyand experience in at least one programming language such as Python, Go or Rust.
  • Experience with scripting languages like Bash and PowerShell.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies like Docker and Kubernetes, and ability to design highly available and fault-tolerant microservices architectures.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation and GitOps principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, and ability to lead and mentor junior members of the team.
  • Ability to solve complex technical and logistical problems in a timely manner.
  • Strong interpersonal to effectively work with a wide range of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to work well as a team member in multi-professional environment and as an individual contributor.


Assets (Nonessential):


  • Work experience in a university, or healthcare setting would be considered an asset.
  • Certifications like DevOps Foundation, Puppet Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, Docker Certified Associate, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Certified Kubernetes Administrator or Certified Jenkins Engineer or documented progress towards these qualifications would be strong assets.
