Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director, Health & Equitable Learning on an interim basis until the Manager, Student Health is appointed, the Counsellor provides services designed to assist individual students to successfully obtain established educational, psycho-educational and social goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides professional, educational, personal and social counselling services to assist students
  • Provides crisis intervention services including preliminary triage and direct liaison with local crisis support services
  • Collaborates in the provision of specialized risk-reducing interventions to high risk students
  • Acts in a consultative and training role to faculty and staff to identify and address student issues
  • Develops and facilitates workshops on related issues and makes referrals as required
  • Participates as a collaborative and consultative member of the Health & Equitable Learning unit, other academic and administrative units, and other stakeholders to achieve College goals that contribute to student retention and success across the learning and living environment
  • Advise on student conduct and risk assessment matters as requested.
  • Builds and maintains community partnerships to address specific ongoing needs of students and works collaboratively with mental health agencies and other community, provincial and national organizations
  • Works on special projects as assigned to advance the provision of student programming at Loyalist College

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ recent, related work experience as a member of a clinical, community agency staff or teaching team serving a diverse population
  • Current membership in good standing with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers; or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • Experience providing counselling support to students in a post-secondary environment is required
  • Proficiency in strength-based, solution-focused model of practice and brief therapy is required
  • Demonstrated theoretical and practical knowledge and application of counselling techniques, confidentiality and current standards of professional practice
  • Ability to administer, analyze and interpret an assortment of assessments, tests and inventories with clinical demonstration of competencies and service excellence
  • Extensive knowledge of local community services and referral practices and demonstrated ability to build exceptional collaborative partnerships
  • Excellent knowledge of safety and risk assessment protocols
  • Excellent group presentation and interpersonal skills, including superior ability to establish rapport
  • Computer, analytical and research skills, initiative and the ability to function independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to work late-afternoons/early-evenings; weekends may be required
  • This position’s home campus will be the main Belleville campus, however, occasional Inter-campus travel is required
