POSITION SUMMARY

As part of an inter-professional team at St. Lawrence College, the incumbent is responsible for the provision of intake, assessment, treatment planning, intervention, and referral as appropriate for students who self-identify with or are referred to Student Wellness & Accessibility for support.

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Providing appropriate counselling programming through various modes of delivery including individual and group supports, both in-person and virtually.
  • Supporting students in Residence facing urgent or crisis situations and requiring immediate attention by evaluating needs, assessing risks, crisis containment, counselling/interventions and providing necessary resources to resolve challenges; support referrals and transitions in care as needed.
  • Development and implementation of student-focused programming supporting social engagement and well-being. Provide navigational support to connect students to appropriate resources and recognize and respond to declining mental health.
  • Individual and group counselling and psychotherapy support students in understanding their current situation, including living with temporary or permanent disabilities, and how it impacts on their learning in order to alleviate symptoms and promote self-awareness and self-advocacy skills.
  • Developing student accommodation plans and ensuring adherence to relevant legislation and policies.
  • Researching, developing, and delivering relevant psychoeducational sessions, educational workshops and needs-based activities supporting wellness for students in Residence.
  • Contributing to the planning, implementation, data collection and evaluation of service delivery in Residence and expands partnerships and community linkages in support of student well-being.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A minimum of a Master’s in Psychology, Educational Psychology, Counselling, or Social Work with an in-depth understanding of current challenges in the provision of psychosocial supports, as well as disability/accessibility services in a post-secondary environment. Registration in appropriate College is a must.

A minimum of 3 years of relevant and recent clinical work experience working with young adults, and adult populations, experience working in a post-secondary counselling role, including assisting individuals with mental health needs and related disabilities for student success. Background experience must include clinical experience and demonstrated proficiency in crisis intervention, psychosocial assessment, and interventions, including working with trauma, anti-violence work, crisis intervention, and individual psychotherapy including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Brief Therapy & other evidenced-informed Models. Relevant counselling competencies should also include at a minimum demonstrated working knowledge in psychiatric difficulties experienced by college students, mood disorders, substance abuse issues including street drugs, over the counter and prescribed medications, and their purpose; and eating disorders. Strong critical thinking, psychosocial assessment, intervention, and referral skills are a must. A knowledgeable understanding of the post-secondary environment, research skills, and the ability to relate well to students, faculty, and staff. Experience working as part of an inter-professional team.

  • Experience in data collection and evaluation
  • Excellent written/verbal/nonverbal communication skills appropriate for developing, facilitating and maintaining counselling programs and group presentations.
  • Ability to help students understand, prevent and overcome personal, social or educational difficulties.
  • Demonstrated awareness of individual differences, diversity, inclusivity, and cultural issues and their impact on practice.
  • Demonstrated theoretical and practical knowledge and application of counselling techniques, confidentiality, and current standards of professional practice.
  • Ability to offer time limited therapeutic intervention based on sound counselling theories and proven clinical experience.
  • Demonstrated capacity relating to the maintenance of clinical records in adherence to relevant governing College, legal and privacy standards.
  • Demonstrated competence in independently managing crisis situations and an understanding of working with clients in crisis who present with severe emotional difficulties.
  • Ability to provide crisis intervention, risk and threat assessments.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of mental health issues.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines governing the provision of services to students with disabilities in Ontario.
  • Ability to administer, analyze and interpret an assortment of assessments, tests, and inventories with clinical demonstration of competencies and service excellence.
  • Exceptional ability to function independently and as a member of an interprofessional team.
  • Strong time management, computer, analytical and research skills required.
  • Knowledge of community resources, agencies and professional services for referral purposes.
  • Knowledge of learning strategies and assistive technology, and experience assisting students to develop learning strategies would be an asset.

Physical/Work Environment Essential Requirements:

Normal office environment. May be required to support students tri-campus, working remotely from an alternate campus location than the student. Home position includes both Brockville and Cornwall campuses. Hybrid work will include some evening and weekend. Experience working remotely with clients in support of mental health needs.
