About this role:

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent Naval Architect or Marine Engineer graduate looking to start your career with the oldest marine classification society in the world. Your exposure to our expert teams will allow you to develop skills by working as an Assistant Surveyor under the direction of an LR Surveyor. The experience gained will, no doubt, help you build a lifelong and fulfilling career in the marine industry.


You will have:

  • A degree or equivalent within a relevant field of study such as marine engineering
  • Ability to travel throughout the region
  • To conduct relevant activities as agreed in personal training plan with the aim of increasing knowledge and competency in the execution of survey and other related work.
  • To assist manager in producing deliverables within projects and produce own training within agreed timescales and of appropriate quality.

  • To understand all LR services and be able to discuss and present the deliverable with the internal clients initially and later external clients and be able to suggest solutions where appropriate.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • To appreciate the time and value of the work to be undertaken for an external client by understanding and assisting with quotes and survey fee calculations.
  • To give guidance to other employees, as appropriate, and disseminate information to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  • To assist in service delivery improvement by communicating internal / external client feedback as appropriate.
  • Ensure Marine Training Records are kept and that the appropriate authorisations are gained through the Surveyor on Development placement.
  • Primary support of the survey team in Halifax, NS through surveys on the governmental fleet projects as required
  • Undertake routine administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
  • Intermediate or advanced experience using MS Office suite of products: Word, Excel, Outlook

Technical Requirements and Qualifications:

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  • To work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics in IMS01.
  • To use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
  • To be able to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.
  • Proficiency in English and French is an asset
  • Ability to obtain the required security clearances to perform the role with the Canadian Navy is a must.
