The Cowichan Intercultural Society is a Canadian registered charitable organization that has been operating in the Cowichan Valley Region since 1981. We provide services and support to newcomers to Canada settling in the Cowichan Valley, and activities to create a more welcoming and inclusive community.

The Youth Worker will be part of a team providing summer youth program for newcomers and planning for youth projects in the next school year, including the next Youth Action Day with the School District scheduled for March 2024 and a Youth Leadership and Employment Program funded by Island Health.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A passion for teamwork and leadership
  • Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail
  • Proficiency in major social media platforms and knowledge of best practices
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Fluency in at least one language other than English
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated success in relationship-building
  • Ability to share our vision and mission and engage others in support of newcomers to the region.

This position is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada for 8 weeks, working 35 hours per week at $22.00 per hour. The opportunity is for young people aged between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment to help them in acquiring employment and/or career-related skills.

The opportunity is for:

- Young people between the age of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of the internship, legally entitled to work in Canada and Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada

- Young people not receiving any employment benefits (EI/CERB) during the internship.

The successful candidate must provide a criminal record check if over 18. This position will start in June. Covid prevention measures are in place to ensure a safe workplace. This role could have some remote components but is expected to be in-person.

Task and responsibilities (95%):

  • Learn about CIS youth programming.
  • Plan and participate in summer youth activities, including hikes and other outdoor activities.
  • Support the Youth & Family Worker in planning youth programming for fall and winter 2023/4, including Youth Action Day
  • Recruit youth to participate in leadership activities for the fall/winter 2023/4
  • Support relevant CIS staff in designing a survey for newcomer youth with a communication/outreach plan to gather responses both on-line and in hard copy.
  • Be a support to youth in the summer programming.
  • Work with Youth & Family Worker and other relevant staff to connect with Cowichan Tribes youth services.
  • Work with communications team to develop materials to recruit youth to youth programming.

Reporting and Accountability (5%):

- Use of reporting & client management databases, including maintaining appropriate case notes

- Regular reporting to Youth & Family Worker

- Attend staff meetings and team meetings
