JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties:

  • Responds to BC 1Call excavation notification tickets by: accessing and reviewing BC 1 Call-
generated work request tickets; verifying and locating areas of interest in the BC Hydro GIS
database using customer locate information and other tools such as MapCon, SAP and the
internet; preparing information packages by filtering, manipulating and annotating BC Hydro GIS
data to produce drawings for use in safeguarding excavators, their workers and the public in
keeping with Distribution standards and procedures; and e-mailing or faxing the package to
requestors. Information gathered may pertain to existing plant as well as proposed or pending
plant. Applies appropriate warnings to the cover letters and drawings and, when warranted by the
complexity of underground plant in the area of excavation, advises requestor of the availability of
more detailed information. Logs and files all processed requests for future reference. Processes
tickets on an emergency basis when requested to do so by BC 1 Call or the Customer Restoration
Centre.

  • Responds to inquiries from requestors regarding the contents of their information packages by
interpreting the drawings provided, explaining such things as rights of way, the differences
between distribution plant and transmission plant, civil underground distribution standards, limits
of approach, and the limits to Hydro’s ability to provide construction drawings and other
information for private property as opposed to public property. Arranges for local civil inspectors to
mark the ground to locate BC Hydro plant when the drawings do not reflect the plant in the field
adequately for the proposed excavation.

  • Updates the GIS database with information from SAM Asset notes, including those generated by
BC Hydro and contractor field staff, and with information received from other sources, such as
address updates from government agencies such as Crown Lands, Regional Districts and
municipalities. Refers to a variety of sources such as hard copy and digital drawings, maps, DAD
and written and verbal instructions to ensure accuracy of database. Creates SAM Asset notes to
report irregularities in database when irregularities are noticed during own day-to-day activities.

  • Participates with other ULC staff in improving the response process and related computer
applications by offering suggestions for improvement and by performing user testing of new or
revised applications.

  • Utilizes a variety of word processing, data base and spreadsheet computer applications to
produce and update records, listings and internal and external correspondence.

  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties that do not affect the rating of the
job.

Qualifications:

  • High School graduation, completion of BC Hydro’s Electrical Fundamentals course plus in-house
training in EGIS, DAD, SAP and GUS to be completed within the first 6 months of starting the job.
Demonstrated proficiency with a variety of computer applications.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Experience or coursework related to drafting or mapping layouts and standards would be an
asset.

  • Please note this is a 24 month Full Time Temporary opportunity.

  • Experience working on a dynamic team environment managing tight deadlines is a highly
desired. Volumes of work can fluctuate depending on construction season and you can be
expected to process up to 150 Underground Locate Requests daily in peak periods. Customer
tact, focus and professionalism are also desired assets.

  • The successful candidate may also deal with in-person customers inquiries.

  • Works in a normal office environment. Occasionally required to calm upset or frustrated
requestors.

  • As part of the selection process, applicants may be required to take a test during the interview
process.

Flexible work model role definitions
===========================
Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home
based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for
each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time
from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.

IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.
Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
