About the position

Building Bridges Community Support is looking to expand our team in Sooke! The position is working one to one with adults with diverse abilities in their homes, and around the community. Individuals have a wide range of needs, skills, and abilities.

Experience working with people with autism, high behavioural needs, mental health concerns, and/or elderly care is essential. Hours are dependent on the individuals you support. As new contracts come in, there are opportunities to increase your hours.

Pay starts at $20 - $22 with the opportunity for a raise after the successful completion of a probationary period. Medical benefits after three months of working with us, and working a minimum of 20 hrs/week.

Requirements (these are the minimum requirements that MUST be met to be considered as a candidate)

  • Minimum 2 years experience working with people with diverse abilities, including people: with autism; who have challenging (sometimes violent) behaviours; who have experienced trauma, and/or may be living with mental health challenges; are elderly and living with dementia.
  • Driver’s licence
  • Driver’s abstract
  • Your own reliable vehicle
  • Business insurance for vehicle, including $3,000,000 third party liability
  • Up to date first aid
  • Criminal record check
  • Medical competency letter from a doctor

Assets

  • Diploma/degree in related field (Behaviour Intervention, Community Support Worker, Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Education, etc.)
  • Trauma informed
  • Non-violent crisis intervention certificate, or other related training
  • Awareness and open mindedness around gender identity and sexual orientation
  • Experience working with seniors and/or people with dementia
  • Knowledge of community resources

Duties

  • Develop trusting relationships with participants in order to provide the best support possible
  • Help with daily routines, including some personal care (i.e. bathing), chores around the house, cooking, etc
  • Take participants on outings around the community
  • Facilitate life skills development
  • Help plan and work towards achieving their personal goals
  • Work in cooperation with the family and other professionals, if applicable, to make sure there is consistency in care/support, and ensure the participants’ needs are being met
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism, including good personal boundaries and clear communication
  • Manage challenging behaviours in a calm, respectful, and dignified manner
  • Manage your own schedule, working with the individuals’ needs and availability (occasional evenings and weekends may be required), and primarily work independently
  • Write daily summaries, and year end reports
  • Assist participants to develop person centred goals and record progress towards goals, and keep a record of what you are doing with them
  • Attend staff meetings (quarterly)

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent
Part-time hours: 15-35 per week

Salary: $20.00-$22.00 per hour

COVID-19 considerations:
Masks are required in the homes and vehicles. A budget is provided for PPE. Some remote services are also offered if participants are willing. Clear COVID policies are in place.
