Reporting to the Executive Director, the Superintendent of Schools is responsible for helping to ensure that educational standards, services, and activities conform to the requirements set by the Department and reflect the strategic objectives set for the Region by the Executive Director.

The Superintendent is accountable for the effective and efficient operation of student-centered schools within their school district. In so doing, the Incumbent ensures that school-based activities conform to the Nunavut Education Program and are responsive to the needs of the community.

The Superintendent works with Principals to ensure that the strategic direction, goals, objectives set out for the Region are being pursued and adhered to. Strategic goals pursued by the Superintendent and others include finding solutions for increasing student attendance and ultimately full-time enrolment, increasing school completion rates, improving literacy outcomes in Nunavut’s official languages, continually monitoring and supervising schools to ensure that the Education Program is being delivered in the manner directed by the Minister and working towards creating safer schools with culturally relevant, positive learning environments. A thorough understanding of the Education Act and other applicable legislation, policies, procedures, agreements are required for this position.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a Master’s Degree in Education, along with five (5) years of an elementary and/or secondary education administration/management serving as a Principal or a Regional Office administrator (e.g., Superintendent of Schools). The ideal candidate possesses or is eligible for a Professional Teacher Certificate and a Nunavut Principal Certification and is enrolled in/committed to completing the Certificate of Educational Leadership in Nunavut program. This is a Highly Sensitive Position, and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land, and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets. Acceptable combinations of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities would be considered for this position.
