What you will do…

You will support Newcomer Youth (aged 13-22 years) in a variety of weekly Newcomer Youth programs for that support their physical, social and mental wellbeing, personal development, leadership skills, mental health and more. You will work as a part of the YMCA Newcomer Youth Team to plan, promote, implement, and facilitate programs, school lunch programs, events, and workshops to meet the changings needs of newcomer youth in our community. You will build strong, positive, and trusting relationships with newcomer youth. In addition, you will provide one-to-one support to Newcomer Youth, while helping them to navigate the systems in Waterloo region such as transportation, school, settlement, housing, volunteering, job readiness and more. This will require flexible hours and transportation to support youth when and where they need it.
You will support newcomer youth to discover their personal identity regardless of gender, ethnicity, socio economic status. You will empower youth to explore personal talents, build self confidence and will foster connections to networks and opportunities that enable youth to thrive. You will promote participation in community activities and volunteerism to enhance civic engagement. You will nurture a global mindset to build awareness and understanding of the global community and their place in it.
What you will bring…
Ideally, you will have experience working with Newcomer Youth (13-22 yrs.) from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. You will have experience navigating the challenges that newcomers in our community face or lived experience as a newcomer yourself. Post-secondary education in Child and Youth Work, Social Sciences, Recreation and Leisure or a related field, is an asset but not required.

You will be an excellent communicator, with strong interpersonal and relationship building skills. You are committed to assisting newcomer youth develop new skills and have a demonstrated ability to work independently and achieve set goals. Adaptability, flexibility, initiative, supporting equity, diversity & inclusion, and teamwork are key competencies you rely on in your day to day work.

This is a part time position, that requires flexible hours of work including evenings and weekends.
