POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Outreach Worker is directly responsible for engaging youth from Seabird Island, Chawathil, Shxw’Ow’Hamel and Cheam (age 12-24) in youth-led programing, small groups and individual (one-on-one) sessions. The core of this work will be out in the four communities. From a youth-centered practice the youth worker walks along side of the youth to continually co-develop programs and opportunities where youth will grow and thrive.


The Youth Worker will be expected to develop strong and healthy relationships with youth that will include in-depth discussions/workshops and support related to youth issues such as suicide, sexual education, gender, mental health, drugs, and alcohol, and developing healthy relationships. The Youth Worker will also connect their clients with needed programs and services such as driver’s education, health services, mentorships, and social supports. The Youth Worker will have emotional intelligence and are trauma informed. For this specific position, the Youth Outreach Worker must be confident in their ability to engage with youth, feel comfortable initiating conversation, and running events/ programming specific the interests/ needs of the youth. The Youth Outreach Worker must be comfortable with receiving a client caseload, initiating a connection with that caseload, and continuing a relationship.


This position requires a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the youth. The Youth Outreach Worker will be expected to work different times throughout the week (including evenings) as well as some weekends.


Under the Youth Outdoor/Crim Prevention Program, this is a full-time temporary position expected to end March 31, 2027.

What you’ll do

  • Connect and engage with Band youth ranging from 13-18 years old, including engaging students at Seabird Island community school as well as other districts
  • Coordinate, plan, and book youth programming with youth-led approach, including evening, and weekend activities to engage all Youth.
  • Ability to set appropriate boundaries and remain professional
  • Guide and mentor inappropriate behavior of youth that may occur.
  • Build a rapport with community resources, organizations, and community members to develop new opportunities for the youth through workshops.
  • Research youth opportunities, services, and programs in surrounding area.
  • Connect youths with necessary and appropriate programs and services both at request and in a proactive/preventative manner.
  • Ability to independently supervise up to 15 youth at a time.
  • Available for varied shifts to accommodate youth availability and activity schedule including days evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to engage youth in meaningful authentic discussions to explore topics that are relevant to youth development. (Suicide, sexuality, bullying etc.)
  • Establish strong, healthy, and appropriate relationships with youths as well as a positive relationship with parents and guardians through communication
  • Serve as a positive role model and support for youth as needed
  • Daily reporting in Mustimuhw
  • Post updates and program related information on the Youth Program Facebook Page
  • Develop activity calendars, permission slips and other administrative materials needed for the youth program.
  • Manage the supplies and grocery needs of the youth center
  • Ensure cleanliness of the youth center and maintenance of the physical environment
  • Record youth activities and attendance to track impacts and trends; submit reports monthly based on trends
  • Seek and attend professional development opportunities to grow knowledge of relevant topics and theories
  • Engage students at Seabird Island community school as well as other districts
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor, Manager, Director, or the CAO

WHAT YOU BRING

Education

  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, child/youth care/human services or another related field is required.
  • 3+ years’ experience working with in a childcare/ youth setting required.
  • Food safe level 1 required.
  • Standard First Aid level 1 required.

Experience

  • Experience and understanding of trauma-informed practices.
  • experience with database and charting software required.
  • Physically able to participate in up to four-hour hikes and other recreational activities.
  • Experience and understanding of trauma-informed practices

  • Ensure that safety and legal guidelines are adhered to.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Internet, and Email).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó: lō culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 4 DL required, Class 4 Driver’s License is an asset.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check.
