Part-time to Full-time Office Assistant/Naturalist- Seasonal or recurring seasonal (preferred) job opportunity for local, sustainable Victoria-based Whale-Watching company!

We are looking for a member of the team who can fill a role that involves both office and boat work. Are you someone who is interested in learning or growing their office reception and organization skills, but you also have previous experience working in ecoutourism or aquatic environments? Job Location:

· Five Star respects and acknowledges that our office is based on the traditional and unceded territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking Peoples, today known as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations, who have occupied and stewarded this land for thousands of years. We also acknowledge the waters that we transit throughout, waters critical to and stewarded by numerous Indigenous Peoples, including the T’Sou-ke and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples.

· Five Star Whale Watching is one of Victoria’s longest-running whale-watching companies and is a locally-owned and operated family business. We pride ourselves on sustainability, responsible and respectful wildlife viewing and exceptional and memorable guest experiences.

· Five Star Whale Watching. 645 Humboldt Street, Victoria, B.C. (north side of Empress Hotel). No company parking, but downtown paid parking and transit stops nearby and bike storage always available inside office.

· On-site shifts, therefore applicant must be based locally (or plan to be).

Hours- Seasonal, variable. Part-time to full-time:

·As multiple positions could be available, start time can be flexible with positions commencing in March, April or May 2023 and would require part-time (estimated 20-30 hours per week) to possibly full-time hours as per company needs require. Between June-September, full-time hours would likely be required (up to 40 hours per week).

· Hours may vary in reality from estimations based on business needs.

Job Description:

·Five Star Whale Watching, Victoria's oldest & most respected tour company is looking for an experienced, detail-oriented & qualified Office Staff/Marine Naturalists for the 2023 season.

· Work with a small team of dedicated and environmentally-minded people who love to discuss this incredible marine environment we call home.

Office:

· Office tasks will include phone calls and emails, managing bookings on an online software, corresponding with guests and other team members, assisting with trip logistics and general office maintenance and other related tasks.

· This is a highly customer-service and computer-focused positon, therefore applicants must be comfortable with being in an office setting and working with the public for extended periods of time. Shifts will include periods of sitting, standing and walking.

· Applicant must be comfortable with time-sensitive and dynamic situations in regards to tour logistics and the public.

Boat:

·This position will also require boat work as a Marine Naturalist (a safety and information guide during whale-watching tours). Therefore, applicant must have experience with marine or aquatic environments, be committed to safety and be able to work wth the public in a dynamic environment. Duties will include looking after guests onboard our vessels and educating them about the incredible marine environment we explore.

·The applicant must be informed in topics of the local Salish Sea environment, or willing to learn these topics. Biology/environmental academic experience is an asset.

·Cleaning, nautical lines and knots, and some vessel knowledge will be required and previous knowledge a strong asset.

·Marine certifications required are outlined below.

Job Requirements:

· Hospitality, tourism, ecotourism or customer-service experience preferred (1-2 years minimum).

· Management experience not mandatory, but an asset.

·Someone with Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS), Marine Emergency Duties (MEDS) or willing to get that qualification is preferred. Marine First Aid is also required. A preference for someone with a Marine Biology background or interest in the Marine Environment. Candidates that have a strong work ethic, good personality, great customer service skills and feel comfortable working on a boat for several hours may also be considered. However, they will be required to gain the necessary qualifications before being allowed to work on our vessels.

· SVOP and/or ROC-M certifications as assets.

· Applicant must be comfortable with typing, sending emails, answering and making phone calls, working with the public and a team, working with a booking software and other computer programs (e.g. Canva, Word).

· Interest in conservation, ecotourism, wildlife and the environment a strong asset.

Compensation:

· Dependent on experience and applicable education. $17-$22 per hour range.

COVID-19 considerations:
All employees are asked to wear a mask in the office and in vessel cabins. Guests are still encouraged to wear a mask indoors. Guests undergo safety/COVID screening waivers and temperature checks. Sick staff and guests are not permitted to enter premises.
