Direct Your Life is a non-profit organization in the Greater Toronto Area run by individuals with lived experience navigating the criminal justice system in Canada. All team members aspire to empower our participants by providing the tools and mentorship for success. We provide a support system to help at- risk youth and recently released individuals find housing, employment, or schooling support, as well as access to additional resources through a variety of mentorship programs.

Our primary objective is to provide a transformative experience for justice-involved individuals by helping them develop strong life skills, meaningful connections, and guiding them to a healthy and successful integration back to society.

Description:

Direct Your Life is looking for a committed board member to serve on our organization’s governing body.
The board member’s responsibilities include advising strategic plans, participating in evaluations, monitoring financial affairs, developing policies, and fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities. We are looking for three dedicated individuals committed to the organization's long-term interests and can meet regularly for board meetings and actively participate in them.

Board Member Responsibilities:

  • Understand and demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s mission and programs
  • Keep up to date with issues and trends that affect the organization
  • Prepare for meetings by reading agendas, minutes, reports, and other documentation required to actively participate in them
  • Attend monthly board meetings
  • Contribute skills and knowledge by participating actively in meetings and committee work
  • Make inquiries when clarification or more information is needed
  • Understand and monitor the organization’s financial affair
  • Avoid any potential conflicts of interest
  • Understand and maintain confidentiality
  • Ensure the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Approving reports, budgets, and other organizational decisions
  • Advocate and represent the organization in the community

Board Member Requirements:

  • Preferred experience in at least one of these categories:

o Legal background (specifically working with non-profit organizations)o Financial background and experience (i.e., accounting)o Fundraising Background

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of institutional and systemic barriers of the criminal justice system
  • Minimum 1-year commitment
  • Ability to attend monthly board meetings and sufficient time available for board duties
  • Proven track record in an executive leadership role
  • Knowledge of the organization and the relevant industry
  • Previous board experience is preferred
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations is preferred
  • Excellent organization and analytical thinking skills
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and demonstrates attention to detail
  • Proven ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities while working well under pressure to meet deadlines
