About the Role
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking two (2) permanent full-time Mechanics working with Transit Operations in the Transportation Services Department.

The successful candidates will be responsible for vehicle and equipment repairs, including diagnosis and road testing, responding to roads calls for breakdowns or accidents, and the maintenance of records related to those repairs and servicing. Duties also include welding and fabricating, performing building maintenance and repairs, winterizing equipment such as towing and snow removal equipment, training of new staff, and other related duties, as required.

Qualifications
Applicants must possess a high school diploma, plus a Red Seal trade qualification in Heavy-Duty, Truck and Transport or Automotive, and over three (3) years prior job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Consideration will only be made to automotive mechanics with their updated air-brake mechanics’ course. Authorized Inspector (AI) Certificate required or requirement of employment to obtain within in the first 90 days worked. A working knowledge of WHMIS and First Aid courses, good working knowledge of hydraulics, mobile equipment, standard bus electrical systems, air conditioning and multiplex wiring systems, as well as knowledge of safe and proper operation of equipment and work procedures is also required. Familiarization with wheelchair lift/ramp and restraint system vehicles would also be an asset. The incumbents must possess excellent communications skills with the ability to work under stress and make quick judgement calls. In addition, the incumbents must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.

Position Details
These are permanent full-time (40 hours per week, variable shifts) Union positions. The (2023) rate of pay is $37.42 to $39.39 per hour. The positions offer an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Skills/Education

• A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with an Air Brake Endorsement.
