Marine field station security and maintenance caretaker

The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre is searching for a team player interested in making meaningful contributions that will support life-changing exploration and discovery in coastal and marine environments. For over 50 years the BMSC has supported year-round education and research on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Job Profile: This is a regular, full-time position (rate of pay $23.35 hourly) with an afternoon schedule (4pm-12am). As the point person at a marine station facilitating security, personnel safety, and routine maintenance the caretaker helps keep the BMSC secure by performing daily checks and simple repairs/maintenance tasks, including:

• Monitoring the establishment and patrolling assigned areas to ensure systems are functioning and safety of clients, perform routine maintenance and enforce station regulations to maintain order and resolve conflicts
• Ensure safety and emergency procedures are followed
• Direct visitors to appropriate areas
• Regular inspections and monitoring of systems to ensure they are in good working order
• Help create a positive, safe working and learning environment for everyone

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
• Completion of the Valid British Columbia Security Worker Licence (covered by employer)
• Within 6 months of hire, completion of Occupational First Aid Certificate- Level II including CPR Automatic External Defibrillator Certificate (covered by employer)
• A valid driver's license
• A clean criminal record.
• Must be willing to live on site (in subsidized campus housing) and respond to calls during non-working hours.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with others both verbally and in writing. Attention to detail and accurately record documentation and information
• Basic computer skills
• Articulate clear and concise directions while under stress and use initiative in dealing with and resolving problems
• Ability to navigate sensitive issues with discretion
