Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Manager of UR International Student Services and Global Learning Centre, the Life Skills Advisor is responsible for providing academic, non-academic, and transitional support services to all international students studying at the University of Regina. The incumbent will be responsible for the development and delivery of various programs and activities offered at International Student Services and Global Learning Centre to support the retention of students and their successful transition to university life and studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Advise international students on university policies and practices to ensure a smooth transition into studies and life in Canada.
  • Under the guidance of the Manager of International Student Services and Global Learning Centre, provide support for immigration inquiries and application processes by organizing various information sessions.
  • Advise international students in all aspects of student transition and settlement matters, and assist students with housing and accommodation needs.
  • Communicate with international students whose first language may not be English.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of programs and activities to support the retention of students and the successful completion of their academic careers.
  • Responsible for pre-arrival, orientation, post-arrival information sessions, and facilitating various student services programs, events, and workshops.
  • Responsible for counseling, advising, and supporting students regarding financial, personal, social, and academic issues impacting studies.
  • Create informational materials such as booklets, brochures, and posters for students (i.e. International Student Handbooks and Survival Guides).
  • Evaluate student needs and provide guidance and services accordingly.
  • Compile student records and data to track and report on student retention issues.
  • Create support letters according to student requirements.
  • Update and maintain the UR International Student Services and Global Learning Centre website.
  • May be require to perform duties off-campus and/or after hours.
  • May be required to be on-call during evenings or on weekends.
Position Requirements
Position Requirements:
  • A university degree combined with a minimum of three years’ experience related to duties outlined.
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and empathy.
  • Excellent English skills; ability to speak foreign language is an asset.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of Canadian government policies in relation to international student traveling, studying, and working in Canada.
  • Experience working directly with international students at the post-secondary level is an asset.
  • Experience in international retention program and project development, delivery, evaluation, and assessment.
  • Advanced knowledge of international student issues.
  • High level of reading, writing, and analytical skills, as well as strong verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal skills; ability to guide students through emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials and reports, as well as strong presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, workflows, and projects while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify and monitor issues impacting international students, as well as approach the solution to issues with speed, creativity, and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate in a respectful and courteous manner, efficiently and effectively with international partners and key UofR stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver superior customer service skills; tact and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of crisis and risk management and planning.
  • Ability to practice sound judgement consistently.
  • Vast knowledge of university setting, procedures, and policies.
  • Experience organizing and managing small- and large-scale events.
  • International work, study, and life experience is an asset.
Physical Demands Pay Grade APT 3 Salary Range $55,977 - $75,569 Annually Status Term Work Hours
8:15 am – 4:30 pm Monday to Friday
In addition: Will require to work some evenings and weekends. Travel may be required.
