Our Advanced Optics Team within the Fixed Networks Broadband Networks organization is looking for a PON Test Specialist in Ottawa. The role supports the development of test fixtures to characterize new optical technologies, perform such characterization, and define and develop automated test fixtures that are scalable to mass production of new optical transceiver modules.


What you will learn and contribute to
As a member of the Advanced Optics Team, you will help realize Nokia’s vision of an ultra-high capacity and flexible access network by contributing to the development of next-generation optical technologies and sub-systems and required testing infrastructure. You will interface with optical experts and various R&D disciplines to help transition emerging and enabling optical technologies into new and novel commercial products that are revolutionary and differentiating.
Responsibilities generally include:
  • Device characterization, testing and analyses of die-level components, sub-assemblies, optical modules, and system equipment and contributing to calibration and control strategies that make new technologies suitable for low-cost, mass production.
  • Development and optimization of automated test setups, and you will spend much time working in our advanced development lab where you will use the setups for extensive device characterization and system integration testing for physical layer devices.
  • Responsibility for processing and analyzing test results and preparing test result summaries for other team members and senior management.


Your skills and experience
You have:
  • Degree in Engineering or Physics, specializing in electronics, photonics, or optical communications.
  • Internship or co-op experience in product development or equivalent experience in optical communication technologies, test automation and new product introduction.
  • Experience working in a lab environment.
It would be nice if you also had:
  • Experience using MATLAB and/or Python for simulation and/or test automation, and understanding of object-oriented programming
  • Advanced Excel knowledge and experience working with databases and related structured data
  • Experience with laboratory equipment, such as OSAs, vector analyzers, BERT, DCA, and similar equipment, and the construction and automation of laboratory test setups
  • Understanding of modulation formats, such NRZ, RZ, Duobinary, QAM, BPSK, DP-QPSK, etc., frequency chirp, coherent reception, signal encoding/decoding, forward error correction, and framing
  • Familiar with statistical analyses and communication theoretic principles, including receiver sensitivity, analog, and digital filtering, OSNR, chromatic dispersion, eye diagrams, and ISI, noise and impairment modelling and analysis, fiber nonlinearities (XPM, FWM, SBS, SPM), and polarization-dependent effects
