Vernon Jubilee Hospital is a 160 bed acute care hospital serving the growing communities within the North Okanagan region of approximately 80,000 residents. The new 230,000 square foot Polson Tower at VJH is a state-of-the-art facility with leading-edge technology and was built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental design gold standards. This new tower offers a new and expanded Emergency department, Intensive Care and Coronary Care units, new Women’s and Children’s Services department, new operating theatres and medical device reprocessing department. Vernon Jubilee Hospital is also a satellite teaching hospital for the medical program at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus. The Hospitalist plays a valuable role on the core service team at Vernon Jubilee Hospital and is responsible for the general medical care of hospitalized adult patients, and for co-management of surgical, and psychiatric patients. This position does not include any Obstetrics/Gynaecology or Pediatrics coverage. The Hospitalist is commonly faced with acutely ill patients and their families, so the role demands superior clinical and communication skills, and the ability to work with other members of the health care team. There is an essential interface with discharge planning experts, community resources and family physicians which requires a high level of collaboration. Our ideal candidate would demonstrate a strong interest in predominantly hospital care and would be interested in a .6 FTE or greater. The ideal candidate will be a strong collegial fit with our cohesive team. The Hospitalist service is supported by a complement of specialty services including Anesthesia, General Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Radiology, Urology and Oncology. Tertiary care referrals are made to Kelowna. The hospital also has a full complement of allied health care professionals on site. Teaching is an option but not mandatory. Day shifts are 9 hours each from 8 am to 5:00 pm; if full time, 1680 hrs/year. Evening shifts are comprised of 6 on site hours and then overnight call from home. Scheduling is typically one week on/one week off with some flexibility, but your share of FTE determines overall number of shifts and time off. During hospital hours, APP rates apply, but on call overnight, income is from MOCAP funding only. Participation in after-hours call is mandatory. Volumes average 15-20 patients per physician per shift. We welcome applications for locum interest during the recruitment process. Qualifications:

      Eligible for The College of Family Physicians of Canada Cert. (CCFP)
      Doctorate in Medicine
      Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS)
      • Additional training or recent experience in hospital care required

Call Schedule:

    Hours of work: Negotiable
    On call requirements: 3-4 evening shift/night call/month if full time
