Summer Equestrian Barn Worker at Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association -Duncan, BC

Location: Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, Duncan BC

Position Type: Full-time, 30 hours per week for 9 weeks, daytime shifts, some weekends/holiday coverage

Salary: $18 per hour

Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, a charitable organization, is seeking an individual to fill 1 summer Barn Staff position. The successful candidates will work alongside our friendly barn team to ensure the care and safety of our horses and visitors is forefront.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 15 - 30 years old in order to qualify for the Canada Youth summer jobs grant
  • Experience working directly with horses is an asset. Those with horse experience will be given preference, and/or duties will be introduced gradually for those with less horse experience to maintain safety
  • Knowledge of (or strong willingness to learn) stable management duties
  • Time management abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain a clean and safe facility
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; including health and observation records
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work on your feet for long periods, and physically maintain safe control of horses
  • Criminal Record Check for vulnerable sectors required
  • Must have reliable transportation to the work site
  • Work in the vicinity of horses and grass hay
  • Accommodations for suitable applicants will be made where possible
  • Must be able to work outdoors at times, and in various weather conditions

Responsibilities:

  • Complete stable management duties according to the specifications of the Manager
  • Grooming, leading and handling horses
  • mucking stalls and paddocks, feeding, watering and administering medications as needed to horses
  • This is an entry level position, daytime shifts, with expectations of flexibility in days of work for staff coverage
  • Maintaining a safe, clean and functional facility; including tack room, storage room, "riders lounge," and washroom area
