You will provide informed advice to regulated parties and members of the public regarding their actions to protect Alberta's environment and public health. Working within Alberta's environmental legislation, you will take a solutions-oriented approach in addressing and managing environmental challenges. You will consult, provide advice/direction and take steps to enforce legislation when required. In your role, you will respond to public complaints on a variety of issues, and assess compliance with the applicable legislation, and assess and respond to environmental incidents, collect evidence to determine if a contravention has occurred, and conduct reactive inspections to assess regulatory compliance.


Working as part of the Compliance Team as an entry-level Environmental Protection Officer, you may be assigned incident management duties including call triaging, contact with public and industry stakeholders, assessment of incident risk and developing communications material for outside stakeholders. The role will also require that the success candidate conduct desktop audits and inspection duties. You will apply the principles of Education, Prevention and Enforcement found in the compliance assurance framework to achieve compliance with the legislation administered by the Department. You will deal with the resolution of a wide variety of environmental issues by assessing environmental incidents and by conducting proactive and reactive inspections to assess regulatory compliance.

About Your Work Environment:
You will be working out of the Edmonton office. Travel and field work within the Region may be required. You will have regular contact with department staff, other government departments, municipalities, agencies, stakeholders, members of the public, special interest groups and the media.

Qualifications


Minimum Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • A two-year technical diploma in environmental sciences supplemented by a minimum of two years directly related experience or four-year degree in environmental sciences (or related field)
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Must be able to work without supervision
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

Assets:

  • Experience in the direct application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and Water Act is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is essential. Equivalencies will be considered
  • Experience in regulatory inspection and/or investigation processes and techniques are required
  • Transferable skills, experience, education and alignment with Government of Alberta values may be considered

Salary

$2,268.66 to $2,971.22 bi-weekly ($59,212.02 - $77,548.84/year).

Notes

This is a 24-month temporary employment opportunity located in Edmonton.

This position may be used to fill future vacancies across the Government of Alberta at equal or lower classification and salary.
