Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Student Experience & Engagement, the Manager, Student Experience & Engagement is an important leadership position that is responsible for creating and supporting a high-quality student experience leading to deeper student engagement and retention at Loyalist College, across all campuses. The role is responsible for programming and events across the broader Student Experience and Engagement team and contributes to an inclusive culture on campus, enhances student well-being, student engagement, student satisfaction, and student leadership development. As well, the Manager is responsible, in collaboration with academic and non-academic units across the College, and the Coordinator – Orientation and Engagement Programming, for the development and implementation of Orientation programming. The Manager is also responsible for all operations related to the Shark Tank Pub - the all-ages licenced facility on campus.

The Manager promotes the student experience outside the classroom as a key contributor to retention at Loyalist College by providing for effective transition, engagement and commitment. The Manager also promotes the student experience as contributing to the recruitment of future students on campus.

Duties and Responsibilities

Programming


  • The Manager has primary responsibility for the development and delivery of comprehensive student programming which serves to ensure smooth transition, engagement and retention of students. All programming is delivered through a student development lens that recognizes the personal and developmental journey that students are experiencing. Together with other key units across the Vice President, Students’ division, as well as other units across the college (both academic and non-academic), the Manager works to ensure students are supported and provided with a student experience that promotes student development leading to increased retention across the college.
  • Researches, creates and executes high-quality daytime/night-time/weekend/holiday programming, events and off-campus adventures, often in conjunction with other units internal and external to the College, that align with Loyalist College’s graduate attributes and College values for student participation, engagement, and development
  • Assesses the needs of the student population to ensure programming reflects the needs and interest of our diverse student population.
  • Collaborates with the College’s Marketing and Communications team and contributes to promotion of student initiatives and programming that promote high-quality student experiences.
  • Measures the impact of programming and events to understand the student experience through student feedback and analysis of student data.

Orientation Development and Delivery
  • Working with a cross-college committee, comprised of students, staff, and faculty, responsible for the development and delivery of extensive orientation programming leading to increased engagement and retention of students.
  • Oversees and manages the Coordinator – Orientation & Engagement to provide powerful Orientation programming, programs and initiatives that support student life and wellbeing on Loyalist’s campuses each term. Ensures that a yearly plan is developed consistent with Loyalist College’s strategic vision, and is responsible for the oversight of the orientation program with particular emphasis on ensuring students see themselves included and reflected in the programming that is delivered

Planning and Organizing
  • Recruits, trains, mentors and assigns work to student staff, with support from the Coordinator, Orientation & Engagement including the Loyalist Life Ambassadors team, that supports the broader Vice President, Students’ team and College activities, with student staff for leadership opportunities.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs departmental activities; develops goals and objectives; establishes and implements procedures for developmental operations; develops new and improves existing programs and services which will exceed student and other stakeholder needs.
  • Reviews developmental performance and implements changes as required to improve services and ensures regulatory requirements applicable to the operation of the portfolio are met. Sets specific measurements for all activities and ensures delivery meets/exceeds those measurements.
  • Works across the Vice President, Students’ portfolio to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to student development, programming, and orientation is adopted and effectively implemented.

Budget Management
  • Prepares, allocates and monitors all aspects of the budget for their portfolio and alerts the Director to any issues that may arise. This includes the development of short and long term forecasts and building strategies to ensure the budget allows for the accommodation of the diverse needs of students and other relevant stakeholders

Human Resource and Risk Management
  • Responsible for the effective operation of all staff resources in their scope of authority. The manager will conduct annual performance reviews for all full time and part-time professional staff while also ensuring student staff are effectively monitored and supported.
  • Oversees all risk management aspects related to programming, events, and operations within their scope of authority. The Manager, in conjunction with the Director, must ensure that appropriate training is provided to staff to mitigate any inherent or explicit risks associated with programming and/or operations.

Pub Operations
  • Works with the Director, Student Experience and Engagement to ensure the smooth operations of the Shark Tank Pub. This includes ensuring all relevant regulatory requirements are met, including overall safety, and effective training of all pub bar and student security staff in areas such as non-violent crisis intervention, smart serve, food handling, etc.
  • Operates and manages all aspects of the on-campus Shark Tank Pub including managing budgets; ordering and inventory of all alcohol; maintaining equipment; recruiting entertainment; contracting outside vendors; monitoring students in this environment; risk management and conflict resolution.
  • TheManager is required to attend all Pub events when alcohol is served, manage end-of-evening closing, manage licenses to operate the Pub, and incident reporting.

Qualifications

  • 4 Year Degree in Business Administration, Social Sciences, Education, or related area
  • Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated management experience in the events and hospitality industry, together with experience in adhering to the relevant legislation dealing with the serving of alcohol and food; experience working with college and/or university students in a licensed establishment would be preferred
  • Experience in coordination of a facility in the hospitality industry that is licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and have Smart Serve Certification.
  • Ideally, the candidate should understand the inherent challenges in operating in an “all ages” facility and demonstrate experience in managing the diverse populations, both of-and-underage students.
  • First Aid, CPR, Mental Health First Aid training, Smart Serve, Food Handlers certifications required or the ability to acquire same.
  • Experience in a client-based environment and experience in event conception, development, implementation and review.
  • Experience in organizing orientation activities, programming and working with young adults.
  • Student development experience and/or knowledge is seen as an asset.
  • Proven, reliable problem-solving, decision-making and prioritization skills
