Job Summary

CAGBC is seeking a knowledgeable and passionate leader to guide the development of our industry-leading Zero Carbon Building standards and support our programs, research, advocacy, and education. Our priority is the decarbonization of Canada’s buildings and ensuring that all of Canada’s large buildings are on a path to zero. As an action-oriented problem solver, you will be a thought leader on this critical and rapidly evolving issue.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Vice President of Green Building Programs and Innovation, (“Supervisor”), the Director, Zero Carbon Building oversees the strategic direction, operational planning, and development of CAGBC’s Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) program.

The Director will create plans to evaluate market needs and directions; lead required initiatives and research to support decarbonization; represent CAGBC as a subject matter expert with clients, members and stakeholders; and undertake to ensure broad adoption of the program to drive carbon reduction. The Director leads strategically, engages significantly in operational activities, and works closely with all management and other staff to ensure the program's integrated and coordinated delivery across all business lines.

Key Responsibilities

Program Strategy

  • Oversee the development and implementation of the ZCB standards, verification initiatives, and support tools
  • Support and as required lead the development and implementation of CAGBC initiatives and research supporting decarbonization

Market and Technical Development

  • Promote awareness, understanding and support for the ZCB standards and low-carbon building design and operation practices
  • Provide support for complex issues faced by project teams seeking certification to the ZCB standards
  • Foster and support policies, standards and regulations that encourage low-carbon building design and operation practices and participation in the Zero Carbon Building program

Stakeholder and Client Engagement

  • Develop and manage key stakeholder relationships and partnerships amongst building owners/developers, designers, governments, utilities, and others
  • Represent CAGBC in stakeholder consultations organized by industry and governments, and participate in and/or present at working groups, forums, and events
  • Liaise with the technical committees and other volunteer technical advisory committees/ groups that support the development and delivery of rating systems, standards and tools

Team Development and Management

  • As part of the leadership team, participate in developing and implementing corporate strategic and operational plans, budgets and performance reporting, and organizational policies, practices, and procedures
  • Lead all aspects of the ZCB team, including day-to-day functions related to planning, performance, budgets, human resources, and customer interactions
  • Provide direction, mentoring and technical guidance to team members, and support their professional development
  • Prepare reports and provide recommendations and information to the Board as required
  • Administer business agreements with key vendors and external contractors

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of operational and embodied carbon issues and solutions for existing buildings and new construction
  • Demonstrated knowledge of carbon accounting practices and standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the low-carbon building industry including standards, regulations, policies, and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated understanding of the real estate sector including building design, construction, development and/or operation/management
  • Collaborative and results oriented in working with different departments, stakeholders, and customers across the country
  • Demonstrated business planning skills with the ability to develop and deliver technical programs with significant levels of resources (staff & budget)
  • Superior communications and presentation skills with demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining relationships with technical experts and industry stakeholders
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in managing and motivating a team of skilled professionals, both employees and volunteers
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional staff
  • Advanced analytical, evaluative, and objective, critical thinking skills
  • Innovator with demonstrated leadership and decision-making skills
  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for delivering high quality work
  • Ability to perform effectively in a rapidly evolving organization
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Willing and eligible to obtain Secret Level 2 Security Clearance with the Government of Canada
  • Ability to travel as required
  • Bilingualism (French/English) preferred

Education & Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years professional experience in a senior role in the green building industry, preferably with program development and/or delivery experience
  • Minimum of five years operational leadership experience including a successful performance track record managing staff
  • Post-secondary education in Architecture, Engineering, Environment, Sustainability or related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
