About the Opportunity

Currently, Thurber has an exciting opportunity for Civil Engineering Field Technicians who have experience with Construction Materials Testing to join our team in Edmonton, Alberta.

A Field Technician’s responsibility consist primarily of carrying out field assignments relating to geotechnical, environmental and materials testing. More specifically your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
  • Conducting field compaction testing of soils;
  • Carrying out construction inspection for various projects;
  • Carrying out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
  • Conducting pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast-in-place concrete piles;
  • Carrying out laboratory testing of field materials;
  • Ensuring all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM and other company and industry standards;
  • Effectively communicating results and observations to clients, contractors and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
  • Liaising with project engineers and client’s site representatives; and,
  • Travelling to local, and remote construction sites.

The chosen candidate will be based out of our Edmonton, Alberta office and will work alongside other Thurber personnel, contractors and/or the owner while conducting field projects within the northern and central Alberta region. Training will be provided.

The nature of the work has a physical component which will require the successful candidate to be able to lift and carry 25 kg at shoulder height. Field work is typically performed on active outdoor construction sites, as such, there are inherent hazards such as traffic, noise, dust and other environmental considerations, and other trades and workers in the area.

Work scheduling may be of a variable nature, responding to service calls placed by our clients on short notice, or, it may be in the form of longer-term projects on one or more worksites. Flexibility in working days and hours, including evenings and weekends, is required due to the short notice needs of some projects, which may necessitate shorter or longer work days depending on the available workload.

Some projects may necessitate working out of town and in remote areas for extended periods of time. Accommodations are provided for out of town work. Overtime is paid after 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. A company vehicle will be provided for field work.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this role, you will have experience carrying out construction materials testing. You must possess a class 5 driver’s license and have experience driving a pickup truck or similarly sized vehicle, and a safe driving record. Prior experience is an asset, but not required. Training will be provided.

Finally, you will also have the following:

  • Completion of a related post-secondary program in Engineering Technology is preferred;
  • Experience carrying out concrete and/or compaction testing is required;
  • Experience conducting pile construction monitoring is an asset;
  • Concrete Testing Certificate from CCIL/CSA is an asset;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing); and,
  • Proficiency with spoken and written English language is required.

Additional Information

  • A flexible schedule, with the ability to work out of town for extended periods, overtime, weekends and nights is required;
  • Shift work may be required depending on workload and client/project needs;
  • Criminal Record Check will be conducted; and,
  • 3 Year Driver’s Abstract and a Claims Experience Letter will be requested.
