Job Description

The UOSU is currently seeking a non-member of UOSU to be the Chief Electoral Officer to manage the upcoming general elections of Executives and Directors of UOSU.

Responsibilities

The Employee will serve as Chief Electoral Officer, reporting to the Elections Committee. The Chief Electoral Officer’s duties will include, but may not be limited to:

Organizing and administering the UOSU’s elections, referenda, and plebiscites;

Interpreting and applying the UOSU’s governing documents in the context of elections, referenda, and plebiscites;

Responding to allegations of electoral misconduct, including by ruling on complaints and imposing penalties where appropriate;

Attending meetings of the UOSU’s Board of Directors and committees thereof, as requested;

Presenting complete written and oral final report to the Board of Directors. The Chief Electoral Officer shall:

Remain impartial during the election schedule;

Authorize all election notices, publicity, and campaign materials regulated by the Code;

Determine the eligibility of candidates;

Organize and conduct the all-candidate meetings;

Organize and establish guidelines for candidates;

Accept complaints from all candidates and voters regarding breach of Code rules and regulations, make rulings, and prescribe sanctions and remedies as deemed appropriate;

Act as the primary point of contact of the elections office and to communicate with voters, the University, media, and others in matters pertaining to UOSU elections; and

Declare the winner(s) of each election following the final tally of votes.

Qualifications:

Undergraduate students at uOttawa are not eligible for this position, per UOSU Electoral Code (article 3.1.1): “The Chief Electoral Officer (hereinafter referred to as ‘CEO’) must not be a voter of [UOSU].”

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

Excellent organizational skills;

Excellent communication skills–both written and oral;

Excellent critical thinking skills;

Full of initiative and autonomous;

capacity to analyze and clearly interpret the rules and regulations relevant to election proceedings, as they are laid out in the Electoral Code, the Constitution and other policies of UOSU.

Bilingualism is a mandatory criterion – please note that the interview will be held in both official languages.

Job Types: Part-time, Fixed term contract
Part-time hours: 15-20 per week

Salary: $25.00 per hour
