Casual Safety Advisor

The has the primary accountability for assisting the workplace safety department at various worksites through monitoring the safety program and ensuring its ongoing efficiency. This role monitors and reports on occupational health and safety compliance, issues permits and monitors high-risk work, conducts workplace safety inspections, provides first aid coverage, and plays an advisory role in the development of Company safety policies and procedures. This role is a relief position to support the existing Safety Advisors on weekend shifts and occasional weekdays.

What you’ll do

  • Conducts safety inspections, conducts and completes hazard assessments on processes and individual projects and provides education/training to support a safe environment at the shipyard.
  • Conducts confined space testing and issuing permits. Inspects work areas and issues hot work permits. Advises and participates in accurate lockout procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Tracks safety issues and facilitates safety improvements. Keeps a record of all infractions. Trains supervisors and workers in the appropriate use of equipment and materials when required (ad-hoc versus pro-active).
  • Ensures workers are informed and cognizant of safety rules and regulations by advising workers on the correct methods, providing advice with regard to the special needs of workers, and actively seeking solutions to their concerns.
  • Identifies and corrects situations that pose an immediate danger to life or health (IDLH). Follows up with corrective measures when unsafe acts are detected. Conducts testing and sampling as required. Trains workers in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including fit testing of respirators for workers.
  • Provides new employee, sub-contractor and ship crew orientation sessions.
  • Performs confined space standby / hole watch and maintains records.
  • Participates with the site emergency response team. Attends all emergencies and directs workforce away from danger. Assists emergency personnel with their duties and liaises with local emergency response agencies.
  • Stays on top of knowledge in occupational health and safety. Maintains current First Aid Certification status.

What you’ll bring

  • A CSO certification or post secondary Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years related experience gained in a heavy industry setting, with shipyard experience preferred (An equivalent combination of certification and experience may be considered)
  • Level 3 Occupational First Aid is required
  • Experience with hot work permitting and confined space entry / rescue would be an asset
  • Educational qualifications nearing completion will be considered.
  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable Federal and Provincial legislation regarding Occupational Health and Safety plus any other relevant U.S. laws and regulations
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, including the ability to optimally transfer knowledge to a diverse group of learners
  • Effective time management, organization and problem-solving skills including an understanding of the accident phenomenon
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiating skills. Ability to facilitate and influence a cultural and behavioural change in the workplace regarding safety
  • Must be able to work independently and initiate new ideas to challenge the status quo
  • Demonstrated the capacity to work in a team, provide situational leadership and communicate effectively both in formal and informal settings
  • Strong computer word processing skills
  • Must be physically fit and able to enter confined spaces regularly as well as work at heights.
