SUMMER CAMP COUNSELLOR

Term: Full-time (35-40 hours per week), seasonal (8 weeks) contract. Flexibility required.

What you’ll be doing…

Autism Nova Scotia provides a Summer Camp program that is a recreation opportunity for children and youth on the autism spectrum between the ages of 5-12 years old.

The Camp Counsellor will work with autistic campers to support meaningful participation and inclusion in daily camp activities such as arts and crafts, swimming, and indoor/outdoor activities and shall act as a guardian and facilitator for the child assigned to their care during camp hours. The Camp Counsellor is responsible for the safety of the camper, and to ensure they have a fun and active experience at camp.

You must have:

Minimum qualifications:

  • Post secondary Education or student in a related post-secondary program (e.g., education, social work, recreation, psychology, etc) or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with children, youth and adults with diverse support needs. -
  • Experience working with individuals with challenging behaviors; considered an asset

Minimum experience:

  • Previous experience working with youth in a recreation setting, and/or individuals with Autism or developmental disabilities
  • Knowledge and experience supervising and managing a team
  • Knowledge and experience in planning and facilitating recreation-based activities

Minimum skills and ability:

  • Must exhibit energy, enthusiasm, and initiative
  • Strong observational and time management skills
  • A high level of professionalism and judgement regarding camper interactions, relationships, and safety
  • Good communication skills (written and oral) and use of respectful language
  • Calm professional demeanor under pressure
  • Reliable and Responsible
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to be on their feet for long periods of time and participate in summer camp activities including, swimming

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct 1:1 support to children ages 5-12 on the autism spectrum
  • Accountable for assigned participants’ health, safety, and whereabouts during summer day camp
  • To adhere to all policies and procedures including those identified in the Code of Conduct
  • Ensure all campers are treated with dignity and respect
  • Ensure the health and safety needs of each camper are met at all times
  • Ensure good communication with staff, parents, and campers regarding camp activities
  • Other duties as required

Essential and Other Related Job Duties:

  • A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation (Travel may be required)
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule

As a Proof of Vaccination organization, all Autism Nova Scotia staff are required to be fully vaccinated. Those who cannot be vaccinated due to medical, religious, or cultural reasons must wear a mask at all times, practice social distancing, and sanitize their hands upon entry while inside Autism Nova Scotia offices or community program spaces. In addition, proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within the last 48-72 hours will be required.
